Manny Perez’ ‘La Soga’ hits theaters this weekend. Support this amazing movie.

// August 14th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Film & Script Reviews, What's Poppin

By Alessandra A. Alma

On Wednesday, August 11th, Dewars and 7-57 Releasing hosted the premiere for “La Soga.” The film stars Manny Perez, who also wrote and produced the film, former Miss Universe Denise Quinones, and Juan Fernandez.

The action packed thriller is set in the Dominican Republic and tells the story of Luisito (Perez) who sets out to avenge the death of his father, after watching his murder by a deported drug dealer. As Director of the Dominican Secret Police, General Colon (Fernandez) feed into Luisito’s desire for revenge and turns him into a ruthless killer. Luisito is reunited with Jenny (Quinones), a childhood sweetheart unaware of his family tragedy and occupation, and quickly falls for each other. When Luisito gets closer to vengeance, he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and must take justice into his own hands.

La Soga is a story of the life, the culture and the landscape of the island nation. It took Manny ten years to write the film. “Everything that happened in the film happened to me growing up in the Dominican Republic, so it’s very personal”, says Manny Perez. “It’s a work that will make you think about life, animals, and people in third world countries.”

Combined with solid acting, a powerful and well written script, a passionate soundtrack and beautiful cinematography, La Soga is a cinematic work of art.

La Soga opens national wide on August 13. For more information on the film visit

Ok so Lindsay Lohan is another dumb ass sucia!!

// May 24th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // What's Poppin

All Lindsay wanted to do was go to Cannes to promote her new Linda Lovelace movie, but unseen forces have conspired to keep her in France. A conspiracy so vast and cunning that they can put cocaine on a table beside her without her knowledge. Are they ninjas? Are they supernatural ninjas? How can she ever escape their web of lies?!

A new photograph of Lindsay Lohan partying in Cannes while sitting in front of a table with lines of a mystery white powder has created a furor. When reached and asked to tell what the white powder is, Lindsay at first replied: “What!??” RadarOnline.com directed her to look at the photo and the white powder on the table in front of her. Lindsay then told RadarOnline.com: “That’s a set up that’s so untrue.”

When I was three I used to put my shirt over my head when I got in trouble because I would think no one could see me. There I was standing in the middle of the floor with a shirt over my head, not responding to my Mom because damn it she’s not suppose to see me!

I don’t know what this has to do with Lindsay Lohan, but it’s the closest thing I could think of.

Ron Howard is prepping Kevin James and Vince Vaughn for his next feature.

// February 23rd, 2010 // No Comments » // What's Poppin

Ron Howard is setting Kevin James to play Vince Vaughn’s best friend in the untitled Universal Pictures comedy about infidelity. The film is Howard’s next directing vehicle from a screenplay by Allan Loeb. Howard and Imagine partner Brian Grazer are prepping a spring start in Chicago. Kevin and Vince will play best friends and business partners, and Vaughn is tortured when he observes his pal’s wife getting intimate with another man. Should he tell? The comedy came from an idea by Grazer, who’ll produce with Vaughn and the actor’s Wild West Picture Show banner. Imagine’s Kim Roth is executive producer. The buddy system has made for a nice transition for James after his long-running TV sitcom King of Queens. He paired with Will Smith in Hitch and Adam Sandler in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. After carrying Paul Blart: Mall Cop, he re-teamed with Sandler in Grown Ups and plays the title role in the MGM comedy The Zookeeper. Scripter Loeb has been writing about all forms of cheating, with recent credits that include the card-counting drama 21, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, and now this infidelity comedy.

Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke do it up with vampires in “Daybreakers”

// January 7th, 2010 // No Comments » // Trailers

We haven’t talked much about Daybreakers, the upcoming vampire film by writer/director siblings Michael and Peter Spierig, but the release of the film’s extended TV trailer seems reason enough to shed some light on it. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe in a world where vampires rule, and humans are a minority hunted for blood. In the trailers it’s revealed that the vampires blood supply is dwindling, and that they’re searching for a synthetic blood substitute. There’s also talk of a “cure”—apparently the worldwide vampirism was caused by a plague of some sort.

I like the film’s reversal by making vampires the dominant group, and overall it looks like a perfectly stylish blend of sci-fi and horror. Quite honestly, I was hoping we’d eventually see a film with this premise in the Blade universe, but we can thank David Goyer for running that into the ground with Blade: Trinity.

Industry insiders praise the film for its high concept, some action sequences, and the Spierig brother’s ability to get a lot out of a low budget. Overall, it was better than they both expected. Apparently, Daybreakers was delayed for some time since its completion, which had them both worried about its quality going in.
