PEE-WEE HERMAN TAKES THE STAGE AT SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON®

// July 18th, 2011 // No Comments » // What's Poppin

Fresh off his recent Emmy® nomination for the HBO production of his Broadway show, Pee-wee Herman will take the stage in Hall H at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con® 2011. The sure-to-be-spectacular solo panel will be in Hall H on Thursday, July 21 at 1:15pm. The three-time Emmy® nominated HBO special, THE PEE-WEE HERMAN SHOW ON BROADWAY, comes to DVD in October from Image Entertainment.

Said Pee-wee Herman of his upcoming Comic-Con® visit: “Initially I was coming to San Diego with the cast of Twilight, but we’ve since decided it’s better for them to have two separate panels. I am SOOOO excited I can hardly breathe!”

THE PEE-WEE HERMAN SHOW ON BROADWAY reunites Paul Reubens and Marty Callner, who directed both this new television production and the 1981 HBO special “The Pee-wee Herman Show.”

The character of Pee-wee Herman is experiencing a remarkable renaissance, with enormous followings on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare. Opening to critical acclaim at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Nov. 11, 2010, “The Pee-wee Herman Show” is 90 minutes of subversive humor and childlike wonder based on both Reubens’ original stage show, “The Pee-wee Herman Show,” and the Emmy®-winning Saturday morning TV show, “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” which became a cultural phenomenon. “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” which celebrates its 25th Anniversary in September 2011, garnered 22 Emmy® awards during its original run, and was recently ranked among the “Ten Best Kids Shows With Grown Up Appeal” by NBC’s Today Show. Renowned writer-director-producer Judd Apatow recently announced that he and Reubens are developing a new feature film based on the character.

The opening night VIP reception will also launch a 4 day toy drive for the holidays. Exhibit guests will be encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys and books for the drive which will be donated to non-profit organizations that serve needy children in New York.

Some of the show’s featured artists have created new, previously unpublished work exclusively for the show. Dennis Calero (X Men Noir), Shawn Martinbrough (Luke Cage Noir) , Ken Lashley (Black Panther), Khoi Pham (Mighty Avengers), and Argentina based Leonardo Marco (War Machine) have all reinterpreted the first cover appearances of the show’s characters. Pham’s rendition of Falcon’s first appearance is a watercolor piece. Manco, a digital illustrator, is producing a rare traditional pencil illustration for the reinterpretation of Jim Rhodes/War Machine’s first appearance on a cover as Iron Man. Also part of the show will be Eric Battle’s (Timestorm 2009-2099) commissioned pieces featuring all six characters; a new illustration featuring Storm by ChrisCross (Captain Marvel) and three newly created works by the legendary Gene Colan (Tomb of Dracula), who began his career with Marvel in 1946.

Marvelous Color will include original pieces from previously published work by Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada (Amazing Spider-Man), Billy Tan (Black Panther), Danny Miki (Black Panther), David Williams (Uncanny X-Men First Class), Jae Lee (Blade), John Cassaday (Captain America), Sean Chen (Iron Man: Director of Shield), Sal Buscema (Captain America), John Romita, Jr. (Black Panther) and , the renowned John Byrne (Uncanny X-Men). Also featured will be the work the celebrated John Romita, Sr. (Captain America and the Falcon), as well as the late Billy Graham (Luke Cage: Hero for Hire) and the late Dave Cockrum (Uncanny X-Men). The show will feature a cover by Denys Cowan from “Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of our Fathers” written by Reginald Hudlin slated to be released to the general public in April 2010.

The run of the show will host a variety of special events including panels on the creation of the show’s heroes, discussions on the techniques involved in the production of a comic book, and “meet the artist” events where renowned illustrators share their experiences and insights.

The show is presented and produced by Somos Arte, LLC, the New York based creative services studio which also produced the first solo exhibit for Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Joe Quesada, in 2007; a show that garnered international press and thousands of visitors during its extended run. The show’s Associate Producer is Black Panther writer Reginald Hudlin (Modern Family, Everybody Hates Chris, Bernie Mac Show and the upcoming Black Panther). The presenting gallery, CCCADI, is a not for profit cultural organization based in New York City dedicated to promoting and promulgating the cultures of people of African Descent.
