Roger Ross Williams got “Kanyed” at the Oscars but Larry King showed him love, sort of.

// March 9th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Where's the Beef

Roger Ross Williams got a second chance to give his Oscar acceptance speech on Monday night during an appearance on ‘Larry King Live,’ but instead was interrupted once again before crossing the finish line. At Sunday’s Academy Awards, Elinor Burkett, co-winner for Best Documentary Short ‘Music by Prudence,’ cut Williams off, but this time the culprit was the show’s host, who apparently tried to signal Williams that he’d gone on too long with his thank-yous.

Given the chance to finish his speech, Williams started from the top, complete with “Oh my God, oh my God,” but then carried on for close to a minute and a half before stopping mid-sentence. After looking around awkwardly, the camera panned to King who signaled Williams to come back to the set.

“I wasn’t cutting you off, Kanye” King told him, awkwardly referring to the incident at last year’s MTV VMAs, where Kanye West interrupted an acceptance speech by Taylor Swift. The singer was allowed to finish her speech later in the night when Beyonce invited her up on stage.

This was King’s attempt to be the Beyonce to Williams’ Swift. Watch:

In what was dubbed the “Kanye” moment of the night, ‘Prudence’ producer Burkett rushed the stage while Williams was doing his thank-yous and verbally nudged him aside so she could speak.

The problem is that she was not supposed to accept the award, and because of personal animosity between the two filmmakers, she said Williams rushed to the stage while his cane-wielding mother blocked Burkett from exiting the aisle.

In an interview with Salon, Burkett said she was shut out of Oscar-related events and because the two aren’t speaking to each other (related to a lawsuit over the film), they did not discuss who would be allowed to speak if they won.

“She just ambushed me,” Williams said of the moment Burkett emerged on stage. “I was sort of in shock.”

The Girl with the Dragon tattoo-Trailer out now in theaters.

// March 9th, 2010 // No Comments » // Trailers

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriets disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Author Stieg Larsson, who died suddenly in 2004, left behind three unpublished novels, known as the Millennium trilogy, which have become a global sensation, elevating Larsson to the worlds second best-selling author last year (behind The Kite Runners Khaled Hosseini). The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of the decades major literary success stories, selling over 8,000,000 copies worldwide and the film adaptation is the highest grossing Swedish film in history and 2009s highest-grossing film in Europe.

Argentina’s “Secret” wins surprise foreign film Oscar

// March 8th, 2010 // No Comments » // What's Poppin

“The Secret in Their Eyes” (El secreto de sus ojos) stars Argentine actor Ricardo Darin as a retired prosecutor who sets out to write a book after he is haunted by a 25-year-old rape and murder case.

Director Juan Jose Campanella accepted the award for the film that beat out the favorite, Germany’s black-and-white entry “The White Ribbon” by Austrian director Michael Haneke.

“On behalf of a crew and cast … I want to thank the Academy for not considering Na’vi a foreign language,” joked Campanella, referring to the language created for the blue aliens in the blockbuster movie “Avatar.”

Other foreign language films nominated this year included France’s gritty prison drama “A Prophet,” Peru’s mournful entry “The Milk of Sorrow,” and Israel’s “Ajami,” which explores divergent views among an urban neighborhood’s Muslims, Christians and Jews.

“The Secret in Their Eyes” won best Spanish language foreign film at Spain’s Goya Awards this year. Argentina has had six foreign-language film nominations and last won an Academy Award with its 1985 movie “The Official Story.”

‘REWARDING THROWBACK’

For the first time ever two South American films were nominated in the category, a fact that Campanella said showed “many preconceptions were shattered in the process” as European films have traditionally dominated the category.

Campanella, 50, said earlier this week his film took a year and half to write after it was adapted from novelist Eduardo Sacheri’s “The Question In Their Eyes” (La pregunta de sus ojos). The film has been a major success in Argentina.

Its title is derived from a focus on the intentions in all the characters’ eyes. In attempts to solve the crime, the main character looks over old photographs and focuses on a man who stares at the female victim in several pictures.

Hollywood trade paper Variety called the film, “a deeply rewarding throwback to the unself-conscious days when cinema still strove to be magical.”

Campanella also directed “Son of the Bride” (El hijo de la novia), a 2001 film that was nominated for an Oscar.

Far from Hollywood, the winning film’s crew celebrated the surprise decision in a Buenos Aires bar.

“This is incredible. We thought the German film would win,” said Marcelo Pons, the film’s art director.
