Little film with big heart: “Falling Awake” goes from the streets of NY to your soul.

Last week I attended the premiere for Falling Awake here in New York City. The film was directed by Agustin, an up and coming director/writer/producer. Not only is he getting ready to take on another film, this cutting edge producer has had the honor of having received four Emmy Awards – two of which were received two consecutive years in a row. As of January 20th 2010 you can catch Falling Awake nationwide and on demand.

The film takes place in the Bronx and revolves around a group of adolescents who alike many inner city teens aspire to get out of the streets. However living in this part of town it’s easier said than done. With situations springing in the streets, and at home all the same it can sometimes cloud a persons train of thought. However, the young guitarist Jay (played by Andrew Cisneros) manages to overcome the occasional drawbacks by focusing on what he loves most, his music. Eventually Jay meets a girl (played by Jenna Dewan) who brings out the best in him. Together the two endure pain that ultimately shape their paths, and most importantly, help Jay put his past behind him.

In Andrew’s autobiography he mentions that if things didn’t pan out with the Falling Awake auditions it would be his last attempt at acting. Instead he would shift his attention entirely to his band, Grass Anatomy in which he is currently working on a new album for. However, it was something about this film that drew the actor in, and he decided to give it one last shot. In his autobiography he mentions, “all of a sudden this role came and I wanted it so bad. I just felt like this kid, related on so many levels.” Aren’t we all glad that Andrew landed the lead? I know I am!

Watching the film I couldn’t help but think of how incredibly talented the actors in this movie were. Each scene effortlessly drew us into the next scenario. Every scene would build you up and leave you anxiously waiting to see what happens next. The characters in this film did an amazing job bringing these roles to life. From Papo’s attacks, to Mafi’s smart remarks, and Jay’s dad yelling at the top of his lungs about household priorities, these actors instinctively drew you closer to them.

I really enjoyed this film because it actually took place in the South Bronx and most importantly have a great cast on board. The actors in this film all come from different spectrums in terms of acting. From poets, so singers, theatre backgrounds, to having had the chance to have landed roles in HBO series, all of these actors reel in their backgrounds to deliver passionate and elaborate acting. Kudos to everyone that helped make this film what it is today and will become even greater as the days progress.

From book pages to movie screen–DEAR JOHN

// January 7th, 2010 // No Comments » // Film & Script Reviews

I’ve been reading a book titled Dear John by one of my favorite authors, Nicholas Sparks. This New York Times bestselling author has had the honor of having his writing brought to life and onto the big screen. Some of you may be familiar with his work from films like A Walk to Remember, and The Notebook. The next novel of his that will be shown to the masses in a matter of weeks is titled no other then…Dear John.

Alike many of Nick’s novels the story takes place in North Carolina. In the story two young teens fall in love during their summer stay near Wrightsville Beach, NC during the early days of June 2000. Will fate keep these two youngsters together, or will the odds be against them?

John Tyree…he’d enlisted in the Army in hopes of doing something with his life after high school and filling a void that he so badly needed answers for. Savannah Lynn Curtis, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer and Special Education major in her junior year of college. The two were from completely different worlds yet those summer days spent together at the beach were life changing. One summer. Two weeks. 9/11/2001…the date that would forever haunt these two lovers.

I won’t get into intricate detail because I don’t want to spoil it for those of you who may want to see this film when it hits theatres in February. However, I will mention that this book was such an emotional roller coaster for me. I enjoyed every second of it, and felt compelled to read the book at any chance I was given. Heck, It’s almost 3am and here I am blogging about it like I don’t have to be up in three hours!

While reading the book I could envision every sentence, and feel what the characters were feeling. The author wrote with such great passion that these roles were no longer simply protagonist in a novel. Instead, they were John and Savannah and throughout my day I’d find myself anxiously waiting to find out what would happen next. It’s a contemporary love story with inconsolable twists throughout the entire book.

What I liked most about this novel was that it raises awareness on special needs, such as Asperger’s and Autism. There aren’t many modern films that make it to the big screen and shed much light (if any) on special needs in general. Granted, this is a love story but the way the various themes intertwine together make the book so much more captivating. It’s a guaranteed tearjerker for those of us who have in some shape or form experienced what it’s like to be in the eyes of an individual with special needs. It’s a beautiful book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read. Trust me, I wouldn’t be up blabbering away if it weren’t! Lol.

The film hits theatres February 5, 2010. Let’s hope the film does this book justice. Movies sometimes tend to take away from the very essence of the printed word. Here’s a teaser of what to expect…

Here is the trailer for “DEAR JOHN” starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried.

James Cameron to produce “Fantastic Voyage.”

// December 15th, 2009 // No Comments » // Film & Script Reviews

With James Cameron’s “dances with space wolves epic” Avatar premiering next week, you might be wondering what’s next on his plate. Well, the MTV Movies Blog is reporting that he’ll be producing a 3D remake of the 60’s Sci-Fi “let’s inject scientists into a guy” film Fantastic Voyage.

If you don’t remember it, the original film followed a group of scientists shrunk down in a miniature submarine that have to travel through a patient’s body and destroy a brain clot before they re-enlarge and kill the patient. (It’s probably most famous for Raquel Welch’s tight white wetsuit.) Most people today are probably more familiar with parodies of the film than the film itself, as such shows as Family Guy, The Simpsons, Sealab 2021 and Futurama have all spoofed it.

Ridley Scott rocks out Robin Hood with Russell Crowe,

Universal Pictures releases Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett Mark Strong, William Hurt. Kevin Durand, Alan Doyle, and Scott Grimes. It seems like the new Hollywood trend is to market period action films by using hard loud rock/metal music — which almost screams “this isn’t your father’s Robin Hood!

In 13th century England, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

Robin Hood hits theaters on May 14th 2010.
