What is J-Lo smoking? cause she needs to pass that shit around.
// January 7th, 2010 // Where's the Beef
So J Lo got on her soap box. I hate when Jennifer Lopez gets on her freaking high horse about how amazing she is about everything. Mostly I hate it because I know everyone is going to pile on about how great she is. Because I disagree! She’s just a mediocre actress who gave some surprisingly excellent performances early in her career. She’s just a mediocre singer who excels at mediocre pop music that some people like to dance to. She’s just a diva, with very little talent to back it up. I guess what really upsets me the most is the fact that as a Boricua she had the chance and responsibility to do the right HECTOR LAVOE story. She should have done the story of the man, where he came from, who he was and why he is so important to us.

She decided to do her version of it, the version where everything Hector came from his second wives perspective. Is that really doing justice to the story? NO!
When I went to see “RAY” Taylor Hackford didn’t decide to do the story from some sucia Ray Charles was with, he told the entire RAY CHARLES story from him being a baby to who he became in music. Hector Lavoe should have gotten the same kind of respect, especially when it was two Puerto Ricans behind this script. J Lo and Marc Anthony had that responsibility but you can guess who has the balls in that relationship cause ultimately it became the “I want an oscar” JLo Movie. J Lo decided that it was going to be a vehicle for her to get an oscar nod rather than really taking the time out and doing justice to a Puerto Rican Icon. I saw this chick on Late night tv comparing Hector to Billie Holiday, really? WTF!
So La Lopez’s latest delusion is that she should have won the Oscar for her performance in El Cantante. Here’s what she said in Latina Magazine:
Why El Cantante was Oscar Worthy: “I feel like I had that [Oscar worthy role] in El Cantante, but I don’t even think the academy members saw it. I feel like it’s their responsibility to do that, to see everything that’s out there, everything that could be great.” “Well, it is a little bit frustrating. It was funny; when the Oscars were on, I had just given birth on the 22nd, and the Oscars, I think, were a day or two later. I was sitting there with my twins—I couldn’t have been happier—but I was like, ‘How dope would it have been if I would’ve won the Oscar and been here in my hospital bed accepting the award?’ ‘Thank you so much! I just want to thank the academy!’ But we joked about it. It’s all good.”
No it’s not all good cause you shitted on Hector and his legacy, she didn’t even want the other actors to collaborate with Johnny Pacheco or Willie Colon on this. I know this for a fact.I was with Willie Colon in Orchard beach and someone mentioned the movie to which he replied “we were pretty much told that they didn’t need our input.”
How the hell do you do that?
Look at what JLo did she completely disregarded who Hector was and how his story should have been executed all in search of an award for J Lo not for the project. I knew this shit all along when I read the script. Heck the only reason Leon Ichaso directed this was cause he was the only director who didn’t fight her in her warped vision. Franc Reyes was considered to direct the movie and because he and her had different visions he walked away from it. If anyone deserves any kind of award it would be Marc Anthony for his portrayal of Hector but how do you think that would sit with the man of the house? To me JLO should get an award for pulling the wool over our eyes. She could also get a karaoke award cause people really, J-Lo can not sing. Thanks for being Latina and sticking together J-Lo!

Wow… I really don’t have a comment the only thing I could say is that I met Jennifer when I was 18 yrs old in church and around the way she was a little stuck up girl who always was working on her dancing, she always rolled her eyes and would give me the finger yes the finger… when I tried talking to her one at church and the other by the Oval (Fountain) in Parkchester.
Ironically they were selling her clothing line in the window of Macys in Parkchester year’s later go figure?
And I was impressed that a little girl who was just a regular girl from the Bronx made it to the top with dancing, movies and a clothing and perfume line, it made me feel that anything is possible, even Franc Reyes one time lived in the projects of Parkchester (were Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep filmed Doubt) at one time while he was working on the script Empire.
I’m not taking sides here but I do know this I am proud to know that Latinos from my neighborhood have made it to be many have dreamed of going, it inspires me to keep moving as a screen writer/ Actor and not to give up on my dream.
Funny I can still see Jennifer stretching with pink leg warmers and her Jennifer Beal’s Flash dance shirt rolling her eyes and giving me the finger…. LOL….
You know, whenever i read that people are hating on J.LO, I laugh cause she is probably one of the LEAST talented of the latinas out there and people want to deny that because she is BORICUA. (Im not so i could care either way) she is a great business woman, savvy marketer, seizing the height of her POPULARITY to diversify her income; Good actress, good singer? Mediocre at best. (not taking anything away from her cause Madonna doesn’t exactly have pipes either and she still sells) Now, would any NON-latino make this movie? Probably not. But that only increases the responsibility for her to have gotten ALL the facts right instead of worrying if you have an oscar worthy performance. And to know of Lavoe just a little bit would lead you to the fact that there was more than just one woman in his life right away. To not see that he was a womanizer (like they did with Ray CHarles) only shows how much of this was NOT a service for Latinos but only to her own ambitions. You would of never seen Skewering of the facts in a biopic of any American Icon without a disclaimer first. That being said. She should of never made this movie. Cause Im pretty sure a NON latino would of done a whole lot better, and thats a shame. She did a huge disservice to Latino movie goers who thirsty to support a Mainstream LATINO film with two of the Biggest Latino names in the american market and to NON latino investers who looked at this movie as a measure to possibly invest in future projects FOR, ABOUT, MADE BY & STARRING LATINOS. Sorry I wrote so much Cas, but i had to say my piece cause this blind latino love for JLO (who doesnt even speak proper spanish by the way) is just dumb. what has she done for US lately?
Can’t we all just get along?
look i get it, Jen made it, she’s the girl from the hood, hat made good. We all love that, we all rooted for her and watched her movie. God bless her too. but it does seem like somewhere along the way, she lost her WAY. Marc rocked EL CANTANTE. he did a great job, and you know what, if she would of said. MY husband deserved an OSCAR nod for his work on that film. i think everyone would be with her. BUT she didnt, she said… I DESERVE AN OSCAR! look, we know the academy is racist! they should of given Don Cheadle a nomination for DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS… but i dont know… i dont think she deserved the oscar for that role? do you andre? does anyone?
i think that’s whats at issue here,
well dre not everyone sees it your way dude. that’s why we are in America and I will continue to trash the execution of the movie all day everyday. I also made it clear that she was a good business woman or did u conveniently not see that.
As i read all of the responses, all i could really say is,what a bunch of HATERS,im pretty sure all of u have follow j-lo career from the start,to say she made it because of her ass is just plain stupid!whats funny to me is no one gives her credit for actually making the movie,do u think any non latino would have touched this movie?no because there was no money to be made telling a latino story,im pretty sure j-lo knew this also, but felt that this was a story that need to be told regardless!and what do we do trash her!
I read the interview where she made that statement and yes it did make me chuckle. Yes she accomplished a lot but that particular performance was not an academy award winning performance. I was just surprised that she would actually say it. I can understand thinking it but to be so bold to actually put it out there is sort of delusional. ~ ChangoBi
i love this.i am a big hector fan this movie sucked.
the only thing i enjoyed was marks acting and singing.
her part was so uninportant. who the hell cares about puch his
second druggie wife anyway. the story should have been all about hector.
dee-dee
I agree with you 1000% as they say on the Maury show …..i feel that they didn’t really portray his life as it should have been from how he started as a kid singing and his good sides all the movie showed was the negative aspect of it and what about his other son he was not mentioned at all which i feel it was a total disrespect to his son he is the only child that the legend has left and no one has even heard about him … she really needs to get over herself and come to fact the fact that the only reason she is where she is at is due to her A$$……its a shame that they did that and as u said they should have collaborated with the ppl he started with etc. Willie Colon , Ralph Mercado and Johnny Pacheco as well as many others he worked with
