McGrady in Darfur

McGrady in Darfur

I watched the documentary “3 POINTS” in which Houston Rockets’ Tracy McGrady went with a film crew to Sudan to see first hand the effects of the genocide in the region of Darfur.

Now I’ll be the first to admit I had no idea who Tracy McGrady is simply because I’m not a big sports buff, I’ve always said this to my friends “you want to talk sports I’m not the guy, now movies that’s another story” we can talk that all day long. Even though I’m not a sports dude I really was feeling what McGrady was doing, he was taking time out of his busy schedule to go and see first hand what is going on in that country and most importantly what he can do to help. If only every rich athlete would have this disposition what a different world we’d be living in.

Watching “3 POINTS” you can get a sense of what a sweet heart McGrady really is, at the beginning he walks us through his old neighborhood in Florida and talks about the struggles of that community and how he overcame them. We move on quickly to his trip to Darfur where he his buddy and the film crew experience first hand what is going on there.

The Darfur region is a drought-prone area of western Sudan. By area, Darfur is roughly the size of Texas and is divided into three states that had a collective population of approximately 6 million people before the crisis in Darfur began in 2003. Experts indicate that as many as 300,000 people were killed during 2003 through 2005.

So much is needed in that area, schools, food, shelter it was actually cute to see how enthusiastic McGrady was to help that at one point he discusses a soccer field and that if it only cost $1,000 to make it better count him in. He even was thinking about putting in a swimming pool in that area, only to be told that things like that were too extravagant, and what they really need is better living conditions by way of housing and materials for the children to get a better education.

This documentary is important for all to watch and understand that we here in the US have it better than most of the rest of the world, and the fact that McGrady took the time out to create that awareness, well he’s my new favorite athlete! I hope that you take the time out to check out “3 POINTS” which is available right now on HULU.com for free.

This project is being distributed by FilmBuff whom I’ve written about in one of my previous blogs but I’d like to share with you once again as to what kind of content they provide.

FilmBuff movies are available on Cable VOD as well as a variety of online portals, including Hulu, iTunes, Amazon, SnagFilms, Babelgum, and others. Their titles range from comedies to sci-fi, narratives and docs, features and shorts, and have a mix of brand new and classic indie content.

Last month, for instance, they launched several titles on iTunes, including

NAKED STATES
Photographer Spencer Tunick travels the U.S. in search of volunteers to pose nude for his outlaw photo-shoots, all of them done out in public and often without legal permits. This documentary chronicles Tunick’s logistic nightmares, his brushes with the law, and the free-spirit-volunteers who discard their inhibitions for his artistic vision, and their own personal concepts of self-gratification.

One Response to ““ROCKETS” McGrady goes to Darfur in “3 POINTS” documentary”

This looks amazing and it’s exciting to see that they’re distributing these films on Hulu, etc. It’s really a new era for indy films, documentaries and foreign films, etc. because there are so many more venues (web, digital cable, Netflix) than there were even 10 years ago, let alone 20.
